KQ - Tips || Stable Pivoting

Hey Guys/Gals, I wanted to see if the little things that I have learned playing ultimate are helpful to you! I will try to release something semi-regularly!

1. Stable Pivoting

I was never taught how to pivot. My teammates who came from basketball always look so natural and I didn't understand it. I had to break it down.

  • 1. Pivot on the inner ball of the front of your foot (see how her back foot is slightly tilted inward)
  • 2. Step out comfortably so you are always in a strong position (don't over extend)
  • 3. When you follow through DON'T ROLL YOUR FOOT (your foot should not end up with your laces down)
  • 4. Note that your power and throwing motion are all connected and that it starts from having a good base to build on

I spent a lot of time just standing in a backhand position until it felt natural. This took a while. Take your time. Break down your motion.

Ask yourself..
  1. 1. Was I balanced in my windup? Release? Follow through?
  2. 2. Did my foot rotate over or did it stay grounded?
  3. 3. Could someone easily push me over in this position or do I have a strong base?

Please comment or ask questions!

Good point!!

It comes to down to maximizing the power you can generate and the speed at which you can pivot. You don’t want to end up with your laces down because that usually indicates you are off balance. Being off balance doesn’t allow for you to generate as much force as you could if you were stable. The idea behind a strong position is that if you can step out to a comfortable spot and move easily between your backhand and forehand then you are maximizing your ability to fake effectively.

These are great tips! But you didn’t answer why. Why don’t I want to roll over on my laces? Why do I need a strong position?
